Chapter 2: A Night in the Hospital

“Forget the ice chips, can I just have a Coke?” Ari set the paper cup down and leaned against the pillows propped against her back.

“When you get out, I’ll get you all the Coca Cola you want.”

Ari rolled her eyes at her friend Tanisha. “You make it sound like I’m in jail.”

They both laughed and the movement made Ari wince. She was still on pain medication, antibiotics and something to keep her fever down. The older doctor who had checked on her this morning told her she’d have to stay another night for observation. Despite everything, she felt all right, save the crushing disappointment over not seeing Dr. Hotpants this morning.

“What’s that look on your face for?” Tanisha leaned in as if waiting for Ari to spill some juicy secret. Heat flooded her cheeks. She probably did look silly, all gaga over some fine doctor she’d never have a chance with. Besides, as out of it as she was yesterday, she might have imagined him completely. Except that, “Luke Collins,” was typed on her arm band under the doctor line. So, she hadn’t made him up completely.

“I’m just sleepy.”

“Mmm-hmmm.”

Tanisha was about to say more when her cell phone rang. She hurried out into the hall to take the call. Ari popped another ice chip in her mouth and closed her eyes. How funny would it be if she really had imagined Dr. Luke’s good looks, his silken voice? He was probably old with caterpillar eyebrows and wrinkled skin. Pain medication never had agreed with her much, so who knows what she was thinking versus reality.

“I’m so pathetic,” she whispered. Yeah, she really was. She had a great life—a good job, a killer apartment in the city, lots of friends, and a newly minted Master’s degree with her name on it. She didn’t need a man. Is that what this was about? Being… lonely?

“Oooh, girl!” Tanisha hurried back in and sank into her chair next to Ari’s bed. “There is this doctor in the hallway.” She bit her fist as if she was unable to say anymore. Ari’s heart flipped.

“Tall and blonde?”

Tanisha gave a slow nod. “That’s a fine white man. I mean, Ari, I don’t usually date—“

“Blue eyes? Smoky voice?” She felt a little breathless now. Maybe she hadn’t imagined him.

Tanisha frowned. “You know him?”

“I—I think you’re describing my doctor from last night.”

“Damn, girl.”

I know. I know, I know! Her mind raced to recall her interactions with him the night before. His hands on hers, the warmth of his breath against her cheek as he soothed her with that amazing voice. Suddenly, there was a rap on the doorframe and there he was, his huge body taking up the space.

“Oh, shit,” Ari said under her breath.

“Oh, shit is right,” Tanisha agreed.

They were staring, Ari was well aware, but she couldn’t look away, and she knew her friend well enough to know she wouldn’t either. Now the question was which of them would start drooling first.
